Dr. Brian Lenzkes
Dr. Brian Lenzkes is an internal medicine doctor based in San Diego who has focused much of his attention on clinical nutrition. He owned his own medical practice with a group of physicians from 2004-2020 until transitioning into an independent membership-based practice, LowCarbMD San Diego. A professional speaker in the health and wellness sphere, Dr. Lenzkes also hosts the Life’s Best Medicine podcast and co-hosts the popular LowCarbMD podcast, which have a total of more than 5.3 million downloads.
Dr. Lenzkes attended UC Irvine and received a Bachelors of Science in Biology before attending University of Southern California Medical School. After graduating in 1999, he started his Residency Program at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego and extended his residency for a year to serve as Chief Resident before starting his private practice career at Internal Medicine Associates in 2004.
Voted one of San Diego’s “Top Doctors”
Dr. Lenzkes has been voted one of the “Top Doctors” in San Diego for 11 years. Even after gaining the respect of the medical community and his patients, Dr. Lenzkes felt a void as many patients with chronic conditions became more sick and required more medications. At the same time, Dr. Lenzkes battled his own weight gain while following ‘standard medical advice’.
Learning about lifestyle modifications
The extent of nutritional training from medical school, residency, and private practice is basically as follows: “Don’t eat fat; it is bad for you and clogs arteries. Take vitamins. Exercise more and eat less. Never skip breakfast, eat six small meals throughout the day so your metabolism doesn’t shut down.”
And he followed this advice his entire career. . . until he reached his highest weight in February 2017, all while working out six days a week for at least an hour and eating the recommended six small, low-fat meals daily. After struggling to maintain his pants size and waist, he would head to work to take care of patients who would ask him: “Doc, how do I lose weight? Isn’t there a pill I could take for this?” His response: “Don’t you think if I knew of a sure fast diet or “magic pill” I’d be doing it myself?”
Then he found out about lifestyle modifications that actually worked, including the Ketogenic Diet and Intermittent Fasting (IF). He was initially surprised by the available science in this area and now overwhelmed by how vast it is and how many success stories are out there with this simple but powerful diet method.
How could the medical community at large not know about this?
After numerous hours of research, conferences and implementation, Dr. Lenzkes would now love to share his knowledge and personal experiences with you. He is currently down nearly 50 pounds after making “evidence based” lifestyle changes.
We can improve or reverse metabolic diseases including Type 2 Diabetes, obesity, fatigue, and mood disorders while at the same time decreasing our risk for catastrophic diseases such as Cancer, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s Disease. There is no “magic pill” but there is a path forward if we have the courage to take the first step. He would love to help you on this journey and draw you into a community of like-minded individuals seeking their best health and a better quality of life.
Dr. Lenzkes gives lectures and workshops to private, church, school and business groups and to the general public.
Leah Koskinen, PA-C
Leah Glascox (Koskinen) is a board certified Physician Assistant who has an interest in metabolic and women’s health, maximizing hormone health, as well as lifestyle interventions and overall well-being. Her goals within practicing medicine are to empower patients while educating them on preventative measures and equipping them with the tools needed to optimize their health. Leah is committed to creating a meaningful patient-provider relationship.
Leah graduated from California State University in Monterey Bay with a Master of Science Physician Assistant degree. During her time as a student, she participated in clinical rotations with Dr. Lenzkes, learning more about metabolic health. She quickly witnessed amazing patient outcomes and wanted to pursue a career within this area of medicine. Leah has a passion for learning about the human body and how hormones and metabolic health play a vital role in an individual’s health today and in years to come. Leah is especially well versed in female wellness and can provide annual female wellness exams in lieu of seeing an OB-GYN. She has also completed extensive training in the management of bioidentical hormone replacement.
In her spare time, Leah enjoys spending time with her husband, Zach. They both frequently hike, camp, spend time by the ocean, workout, and take walks in their neighborhood. They are both active in their local church and enjoy meeting new people.
Mary DePuy
For many years, Mary struggled profoundly with not only weight gain, but severe joint pain due to arthritis as well as the ramifications of Hashimoto’s disease; Mary was in a constant state of inflammation, felt fatigued often, skin and hair were in a poor state, and her mind was often in a fog. Despite her best efforts to do what was considered healthiest(eating low fat, whole grains, eating small meals 5x/day), she saw no change until she found the Keto lifestyle. By following a ketogenic lifestyle, Mary is now 60 pounds lighter, has gone from a size 14 to a size 8, is healing from chronic autoimmune conditions, and is mentally strong and sharp. The transformation took 6 months of dedication and is now being maintained with modified LowCarb/Paleo/Fasting lifestyle with lots of yoga and strength training.
Naturally, a love for education and a desire to help others discover the health that she had achieved, led Mary into becoming certified as a health coach, specializing in LowCarb diet interventions. When good friend, Brian Lenzkes, decided to start his own practice, Mary was excited to take on the challenge of managing the practice and partnering with him to bring a new model of healthcare to San Diego and beyond.
Mary’s passion for holistic health and alternative healing modalities continues to grow with every new learning opportunity and experience with patients. When she is not working with the patients or doing needed admin, you can find Mary watching videos, listening to podcasts, and reading articles on naturopathic practices and natural treatment protocols.
And, in her free time, Mary prioritizes quality time with her family…she lives for babysitting her grandkids. Additionally, she loves reading classic books in cozy rooms, traveling the world (UK is her current favorite), and enjoying time with God, most particularly in nature.
